Bernie, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, holds a degree in Elementary Education from Xavier University, where she swam for four years and captained the women's swim team from sophomore to senior year. Her outstanding performance earned her the title of Swimmer of the Year for three consecutive seasons and Academic All-American Honors.
Bernie began her competitive swim coaching career in 1985 and dedicated herself to the sport until her retirement from the pool deck in 2021. Throughout her coaching journey, Bernie has worked with swimmers of all levels and led teams in various states, including Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, New England, and Colorado.
Bernie holds numerous certifications from organizations like YMCA, USA, NISCA Swimming, OHSAA, IHSAA, as well as being ASCA certified and an ASCA Fellows Class of 2016. Her expertise extends to Personal Training, Strength and Conditioning, and Sports Nutrition. Emphasizing a team culture of positivity and making the right choices, Bernie believes in practicing the correct habits rather than striving for perfection, as no one is perfect.
Beyond her professional achievements, Bernie finds joy in her family life. She is happily married to Mark, and together they have five sons, three daughters-in-law, and wonderful grandchildren. Apart from swimming, Bernie indulges in powerlifting, reading, hiking, camping, and flipping Goodwill finds.
